For city lovers base yourself in Malaga City, capital of the Costa del Sol. Once considered the poor cousin of Andalusia’s capital city, Seville, it now competes successfully for attention, thanks to its profusion of quirky museums, delightful pedestrianised centre, innovative restaurants and stylish hotels, many featuring rooftop terraces with bar, pool and stunning views. Muelle Uno is a contemporary leisure complex in the port – while a new arty district called SOHO is bringing a bohemian edge to the city.

The opening of the Picasso Museum in 2003 triggered the city’s cultural rebirth, and visitors are now flocking to this port city which boasts excellent access, top-class cuisine and fascinating monuments, from Moorish and Roman times through to modern day – while retaining its authentic Andalucian feel.

Basing yourself on the Costa del Sol provides easy access to the beautiful cities of Seville famous for flamenco dancing. Major landmarks include the ornate Alcázar castle complex, built during the Moorish Almohad dynasty, and the 18th-century Plaza de Toros de la Maestranza bullring. The Gothic Seville Cathedral is the site of Christopher Columbus’s tomb and a minaret turned bell tower, the Giraldo. Granada in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, known for grand examples of medieval architecture dating to the Moorish occupation, especially the Alhambra. This sprawling hilltop fortress complex encompasses royal palaces, serene patios, and reflecting pools from the Nasrid dynasty, as well as the fountains and orchards of the Generalife gardens.
